Ben Folds sings the Levi Johnston blues

Musician Ben Folds sometimes dabbles in the political in his music, but for one song he has jumped right in.

Folds, in a collaboration with British novelist Nick Hornby, crafted a song entitled “Levi Johnston’s Blues,” which is making the rounds on the Internet this week. (Perhaps as a post-engagement anthem?) It tells the story of young Levi who doesn’t realize he’s “just knocked up the VP nominee’s daughter,” and includes this gem of a chorus: “I’m a f—ing redneck and I like to hang out with the boys, play some hockey, do some fishing and kill some moose.”

Hornby, who contributed the lyrics, talked about the song last week on BBC Radio.

“He had done this MySpace page very candid about his teenage life, which was very quickly taken down, but it was circulating the Internet, so most of the words are taken from that,” Hornby said, adding that he and Folds teamed up in 2008 right around the time when the news of Bristol Palin’s pregnancy broke.
