Hillary Clinton won the Mississippi primary on Tuesday night, continuing her sweep of the Southern primaries and moving Bernie Sanders even further away from the Democratic nomination.
Going into the primary Clinton led Sanders by more than 40 points in the polls. The former secretary of state is particularly popular with African-American voters, who helped her beat Sanders in South Carolina, Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Texas, Tennessee, Virginia and Louisiana by large margins.
The Mississippi primary is among the last states in Clinton’s “Southern firewall,” meant to block Sanders from going further in the nominating contest. The Vermont senator does particularly well in states up North or with low minority populations.
Before the Mississippi primary Clinton led Sanders in delegates 672-447, without the help of the super delegates that give her even more of an edge. With 41 delegates up for grabs in Mississippi the Democratic front-runner continues her lead going in to next week’s primaries in Florida, Illinois, Missouri, North Carolina and Ohio.
The results arrive just one day before Clinton and Sanders take to the debate stage in Miami, Fla., who will hold their primary on March 15.
