Capitol File peers into Piers Morgan’s — interview style

It is CNN’s Piers Morgan who graces the cover of this month’s Capitol File magazine and while he’s not necessarily a Washingtonian, he’s sure interviewed a lot of them. In an essay, Morgan writes what it’s been like to interview some of politics’ most important personalities since taking over for Larry King. And it’s their personalities that he’s really trying to put his finger on.”Elections are won or lost with policy first, of course,” he writes. “But without a personality to match, you have no chance.”

He discusses his first “Piers Morgan Tonight” interview with former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, which some criticized as being too personal because Morgan asked why she never wed and what she would do on a first date. “Yet I found her answers made her sound considerably more human and likeable than anything she had said in previous interviews,” he said.

He also brings up his awkward interview with former Delaware U.S. Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell, who walked off halfway through. “One word of advice for all political guests of mine–do not look affronted, or behave irrationally, when asked perfectly reasonable questions, even if you do not like them,” he suggests.
