The National Archives is paying special attention to first ladies Lady Bird Johnson and Pat Nixon, as 2012 marks the year that both women would have turned 100. But since dresses and accessories belong at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, the folks at the Archives are putting on display what they do best — documents. Among the items in a “special one-case display” are an original issue of “The Parrot,” the high school newspaper of Lady Bird Johnson and stage and interview passes for Pat Nixon’s work as an extra in the films “Becky Sharp” and “The Great Ziegfeld.” (Alright, that’s kind of cool). Also, an inscribed book given to Lady Bird Johnson by LBJ before they were married and before he was president.
These rarely seen documents and objects, and some photographs too, will be displayed at the National Archives in the Public Vaults exhibit. A second installment of Johnson and Nixon artifacts will open in early fall and explore first ladies’ time at the White House.
