Margaret Carlson’s personal email gets hacked

Friends of Bloomberg columnist Margaret Carlson were greeted Monday morning with an email plea for help from the prominent journo. She was in Madrid, Spain, and needed cash immediately. Or, rather, her personal email account had been hacked, using the same, tired old sob story that online hackers have been using for years to wrangle money from someone’s sympathetic online contacts.

“Everything was fine until I was attacked on my way back to the hotel, I wasn’t hurt but I lost my money, bank cards, mobile phone and my bag in the course of the attack,” the email reads. “I’ve been to the embassy and they are helping me with my documentation so I can fly out but I’m urgently in need of some money to pay for my hotel bills and my flight ticket home, will PAY BACK as I get back home.”

Yeah. Right.

We reached out to Carlson to make sure she was indeed not stuck in Madrid, but have yet to hear back.
