Secretary of State John Kerry refused to directly respond to Republican nominee Donald Trump’s call for Congress to officially declare war against the Islamic State.
On ABC’s “This Week,” Kerry said Sunday that the U.S. is making “very significant progress” against terrorists abroad, but he did not specifically address Trump’s comments.
The Islamic State “has not gained one foot of territory and held it either in Iraq or Syria since we began this effort a year ago,” Kerry said. “I define that as success.”
It was after the terrorist attack in Nice, France, last week that Trump said he would call for an official declaration of war. “This is war,” he said on Fox News. “If you look at it, this is war.”
At a campaign event, Trump also said of the Obama administration that “every single thing they’ve touched has turned to horrible, horrible, death-defying problems.”
