New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie chided his Republican opponents, and Sen. Marco Rubio in particular, for ignoring a question on entitlement reform and instead choosing to fight over their tax plans at Thursday night’s Fox Business debate.
“Marco, you had your chance, you blew it,” Christie said to Sen. Marco Rubio as he interrupted the tax fight and said he’d answer the question on entitlement reform. Rubio had been asked how he would reform Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security should he win the White House, but instead pivoted to criticize Sen. Ted Cruz’s proposal for a value-added tax.
“The fact is, the reason no one wants to answer entitlements up here is because it’s hard,” Christie said. “Entitlements are hard.”
Christie has stressed entitlement reform more than any other GOP candidate, releasing a plan to reform the major federal safety-net programs. He touted that plan on the stage Thursday night, after earlier in the week criticizing his opponents for not releasing their own proposals.
“We need to reform Social Security, and mine is the only plan that saves over $1 trillion,” Christie said.
