Loretta Lynch headed to Baltimore

New Attorney General Loretta Lynch will travel to Baltimore on Tuesday with Vanita Gupta, the head of the Justice Department’s civil rights division. Ronald Davis, director of its Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, will also accompany the two.

Lynch, who was confirmed just weeks ago, plans to meet with city officials, members of Congress, law enforcement and faith and community leaders, according to a Justice Department official.

Her visit comes just four days after six police officers were charged in the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray last month, a black male who died after injuries sustained while in police custody. Riots have plagued Baltimore for more than a week.

Last week, Lynch called the violent unrest “counterproductive” while promising to advance the conversation “within the Baltimore community and across the nation about the way our law enforcement officers interact with the residents they are charged to serve and protect.”
