In a pro sports town like Washington, there have been dozens of camera-ready moments throughout the years. Now, an exhibit will showcase the best of the best.
Walter Iooss Jr. has taken photos for Sports Illustrated for almost 50 years. His pictures have graced more than 300 covers, but somehow he has narrowed his collection down to 40 photographs to be displayed at the Newseum from Oct. 9 to Dec. 31.
“Athlete” combines his own words about the pictures on display and his elaborate journals to showcase his favorite memories.
“The moment a ball is tossed at you that way, there’s nothing else in world except the ball and you. That’s the great beauty of sports … during that period when you concentrate, there is nothing else that, there’s nothing else going on in the world,” Iooss said about his personal favorite photograph, of children playing stickball in Cuba.
