Long-time aide to veteran Mississippi senator arrested on drug charges

Sen. Thad Cochran’s office manager has been arrested and charged with possession and intent to sell drugs, according to USA Today.

Fred W. Pagan, 49, was arrested after Department of Homeland Security agents detected the drug “GBL,” an ingredient of the “date rape drug,” in a package from China that was addressed to Pagan’s home. After agents and D.C. police raided Pagan’s home, USA Today reported, they also discovered a significant amount of methamphetamine.

When questioned, Pagan said he intended to distribute the drugs in exchange for sexual favors.

Politico said the bust that snared the Mississippi Republican’s long-time aide was part of a two-week investigation after officers in Ohio found a package from China allegedly addressed to Pagan on April 9. That package contained the drug GBL — or gamma-Butyrolactone — which is often used as a date-rape drug. Pagan told officers he had received three previous shipments of the drug.

Cochran has been in the Senate since 1978 and is chairman of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee.
