A Republican congressman who sits on the House Select Committee on Benghazi said Thursday he will not seek reelection in November.
Georgia Rep. Lynn Westmoreland is planning to retire at the end of his sixth term, noting Washington, D.C., is a “much different environment” now than when he first arrived in 2004.
“After a busy fall in Congress, I finally had the opportunity for quiet reflection over the Christmas break. I spent time in prayer and with my family, and with their blessing, have decided I will no longer seek reelection for Georgia’s Third Congressional District,” Westmoreland said in a statement.
Westmoreland has spent 12 years in the House, serving Georgia’s 8th District prior to redistricting.
In the 114th Congress, he sat on the House Financial Services Committee, Steering Committee, House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and House Select Committee on Benghazi. He previously served in various leadership roles at the National Republican Congressional Committee.
