Rep. Grimm pleads guilty, won’t resign

Rep. Michael Grimm pleaded guilty Tuesday to one federal count of tax evasion, but said he will not resign from Congress.

The New York Republican earlier this year plead not guilty to 20 felony counts, but since then changed course to accept a plea bargain, setting up his guilty plea Tuesday.

Under House rules, Grimm may continue to serve in Congress after having been convicted of a felony. He won re-election comfortably in November in spite of his legal troubles, and so far, House Speaker John Boehner has not pressed him to resign.

Democrats, however, have begun to demand that Grimm step down, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who on Tuesday called for Grimm’s resignation.

Should Grimm remain in Congress, the House Ethics Committee will likely resume its investigation into Grimm, which had been put on hold pending the federal case against him.
