A combat veteran running for the Senate called on supporters Tuesday to condemn Donald Trump for his comments about his time at an expensive military prep school.
Rep. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., said in an email that Trump still hasn’t apologized for his “outrageous” claim nearly two months ago that he “always felt that he was in the military” because he attended a military prep school.
“Donald Trump’s words are an insult to those who sacrifice for our nation. Tell him to stop pretending his prep school education compares to the service of our troops,” Duckworth wrote in the email.
The email prompted supporters to add their name to a petition calling out Trump.
Trump had also said that he felt he had “more training militarily than a lot of the guys that go into the military.”
Duckworth is a combat veteran who deployed to Iraq in 2004 with the Army National Guard and lost both legs when her helicopter was shot down.
Ahead of the fourth GOP presidential debate Tuesday night, Duckworth wrote that the day before Veterans Day is the time to “hold Donald Trump accountable” for dishonoring those who did serve.
Trump visited Illinois on Monday, speaking to crowd of more than 10,000 supporters in Springfield, CBS News reported.
Duckworth is challenging Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., for his Senate seat in one of the mostly closely watched congressional races in 2016 that could determine control of the Senate. Politico recently named him “the most endangered Republican in the country.”
