Ted Cruz’s presidential campaign unveiled a new ad that links Donald Trump to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, a liberal Democrat.
The ad, titled “Great,” shows images of tabloid headlines slamming de Blasio while a voiceover of Trump sings his praises.
“I think he’s a smart guy that knows what’s going on and I think he’s not going to want to destroy New York,” Trump says in the ad. “He’ll end up being a good mayor, maybe a very good mayor. I think he’s going to want to make New York great.”
The ad closes with font onscreen that reads, “Perhaps Donald Trump doesn’t know what the word ‘great’ means.”
Cruz and de Blasio have bickered back-and-forth in the run up to Tuesday’s New York primary. The mayor cautioned Cruz to “be careful” when discussing Democrats’ scandals. The Texas senator responded with an ad claiming de Blasio “treats cops like criminals.” Cruz’s latest attack escalates the feud to new heights.
But Trump is expected to win the New York primary overwhelmingly, and Cruz has set expectations extraordinarily low. In an interview with Fox 5 in New York that aired on Friday, the senator stopped just short of conceding defeat in the Empire State.
“If Donald doesn’t get substantially above 50 percent, I think people will see that as a big loss, but we’re campaigning to earn delegates here and I’ll tell you, Donald is not going to get 1,237,” Cruz told Fox 5. “And we have won state after state after state. We are beating Donald over and over and over again.”
Cruz is campaigning in New York on Friday, and hold a rally in Rochester this evening.
