Schwarzenegger in D.C., cool on Whitman

Is there bad blood between California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman?

The governor seemed rather cool about Whitman, a former CEO of eBay, at a film premiere in Washington on Thursday night.

“I’m not planning any endorsements right now,” he said.

He also wouldn’t say whether Whitman would carry on his centrist policies, dancing around the question instead.

“They are driven to the right, they are driven to the left, to win the primaries,” he said. “[Now is] when we really find out what they stand for.”

Schwarzenegger was in Washington for the premiere of “Gerrymandering,” a documentary that explains the complexities of gerrymandering using cartoons and real-life examples reminiscent of “School House Rock.”

He is featured in the film because of his support for California’s Proposition 11. The 2008 ballot initiative created a citizens commission to handle the redistricting of the state’s legislative districts, thereby preventing state lawmakers from carving up California to suit their political ends.

“The legislators hate it,” he boasted. “As you can see, the legislators would promise that they were going to do it, but let me tell you something, I have been here for six years, you cannot trust them.”

Schwarzenegger also talked up another recent victory — “Because I believe in sequels,” the governor joked.

He touted Proposition 14, the open-primary referendum that voters approved last week.

“It shows that the politicians go further and further to the right and further and further to the left, but the voters are in the center,” he said.
