Kerry: We’ll negotiate with Assad in Syria

Secretary of State John Kerry said Sunday that the United States will have to negotiate with Syrian President Bashar Assad to end the nation’s deadly civil war.

“We have to negotiate in the end,” Kerry said on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”

Kerry acknowledged that a military solution to end Syria’s civil war will not work and that a diplomatic and political strategy is needed to stop the bloody civil war between Assad’s government and rebel forces that has killed more than 200,000 people.

The U.S. government wants Syria to implement a 2012 agreement backed by the United Nations that would bring peace to the country by bringing government and rebel forces together to form a transitional government.

Kerry said if Assad will agree to begin implementing the 2012 plan, “people are prepared” to negotiate with him.

Kerry warned if Assad does not move to the negotiating table, steps will be taken to increase pressure on him, but Kerry did not say specifically what actions the United States would take.
