Hillary Clinton said Sunday she understands that voters question if she’s running for them or for herself.
“There’s an underlying question, I think, that’s in the back of people’s mind,” Clinton said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “Is she in it for us, or is she in it for herself?”
Clinton was responding to a question about how she can win over independent voters, a section of the U.S. electorate she has struggled to rally. She said she’s going to do what she’s “always done” by continuing to reach out to voters to explain who she really is.
“I’m going to demonstrate I was in it, fighting for people’s lives before even my husband was in it,” Clinton said.
Clinton’s main opponent for the Democratic presidential nomination, Sen. Bernie Sanders, won the New Hampshire primary by a wide margin, partially by attracting independent voters. But Clinton seized first place in Nevada on Saturday, although she won it by a much smaller margin than polls had originally predicted.
