Just in case those rallying for reasonableness make a little mess, comedian Jon Stewart has a solution.
He’s asked those who attend his Oct. 30 “Rally to Restore Sanity” to give a little moolah to keep up the National Mall.
“We hope that, in the name of sanity and reasonableness, you … will actually pick up after yourselves,” a posting on his Web site reads. “But just in case you accidentally, like, put a beverage down on the Mall’s coffee table without using a coaster, we figure that giving a little something back to the National Mall might, at least, soften the blow,” it continued, linking to the Trust for the National Mall.
The trust is a nonprofit partner of the National Park Service, which is responsible for taking care of the grounds.
Caroline Cunningham, president of the Trust for the National Mall, said she was “absolutely thrilled” by the news.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness about the need to restore the National Mall,” she said in an e-mail. “Hopefully, it will result not only in donations to the Trust but greater interest in the Mall’s renovation and restoration.”
Stewart made the official announcement on Wednesday night’s show. Not to be outdone, Colbert is asking those who come to Washington for his “March to Keep Fear Alive” to make donations as well. His charity of choice is DonorsChoose.org, a Web site that helps put better supplies in the hands of public school teachers.
