Rep. Jim Jordan is urging Ohio conservatives to back Sen. Rob Portman for re-election in 2016.
In an email shared with the Washington Examiner that was due to be blasted out Friday morning, Jordan urges support for Portman’s re-election bid as the Republican first-term senator seeks to solidify support across the Ohio GOP in preparation for a potentially tough battle in the general election. The email, sent out by Portman’s campaign, urges supporters to help the senator amass 5,000 endorsements.
Jordan is a staunch conservative with a considerable fan base among Tea Party-affiliated Republicans. Portman sports a conservative voting record that should be sufficient to satisfy GOP activists, but public support from Jordan should additionally help him keep at bay the potential for a primary challenge from the right.
“We know the left is coming after him in 2016 because Democrats are targeting Ohio in hopes of winning back the Senate. We must stand strong with Rob — we can trust him to fight Obamacare, fight for lower taxes, and fight for a better, more accountable government,” Jordan says in the email. “Desperate Democrats and liberals across the country are going to spend millions attacking Rob. Let’s show them that Ohio is united around Rob by helping him meet his goal of getting 5,000 online endorsements in two weeks.”
