Draft Biden building up in South Carolina

Two well-known South Carolina Democrats will lead the early primary state’s grassroots efforts for Joe Biden, assuming the vice president jumps into the 2016 race.

Barack Obama 2008 alum Inez Tenenbaum and state Sen. Gerald Malloy will work under the leadership of Isaiah Nelson, the South Carolina state director of Draft Biden.

Nelson comes to the Draft Biden effort after running the coordinated campaign for the South Carolina Democratic Party last year. He also worked under Dick Harpootlian, a South Carolina lawyer and one of Biden’s biggest supporters. Nelson emphasized that the state is a “real natural home for the vice president” as Biden has “very deep ties here.”

The staff in South Carolina will focus on emphasizing those ties in the coming weeks as Biden looks to make a decision on whether to run for president. Since Biden’s decision is uncertain, there is no timeline.

“This is all through Draft Biden, we are not talking with the VP,” Nelson told the Examiner. “We are focused on capitalizing on the organization in the state that wants to see him jump in the race, but it’s important to give him the space to make the decision with his family.”

As the Hillary Clinton email scandal heats up, Draft Biden is upping its efforts. While Biden has yet to commit to a presidential race, rumors about him jumping in have increased in recent weeks.
