A petition on the Whitehouse.gov site is gathering signatures to rename Ohio’s highest peak to “Mount Sarah Palin.”
The signature campaign seeks to modify the name of Campbell Hill, located 50 miles northwest of Columbus, Ohio, and stands at about 1,550 feet.
“We the people would like to rename Ohio’s highest peak ‘Mount Sarah Palin,'” the petition reads, in an effort to “honor Alaska’s most famous governor.”
“If the people of Ohio feel it is their right to name Alaska’s highest mountain, then it would only be fitting for Alaska to rename Ohio’s highest peak.”
Just last week, President Obama declared that North America’s tallest peak, Mount McKinley, would return to its native Alaskan name, Denali — meaning “the great one.” The 20,237-foot tall mountain was officially renamed by Congress in 1917 in honor of President William McKinley, who hailed from Ohio.
Following the announcement, several members of Congress from the Buckeye State, including House Speaker John Boehner, expressed their dismay, writing in a letter to the president that McKinley’s “legacy has been tarnished by a political stunt to promote a partisan agenda.”
The petition was initiated on Thursday, created by an individual from Dallas known only as “M.R.” At the time this article was written, the petition had 194 signatures.
A threshold of 100,000 signatures must be reached in 30 days for the White House to respond to any petition.
