Sanders breaks his own record, raises $44 million in March

Bernie Sanders announced Friday that his campaign raised $44 million in March, passing his record-breaking February numbers.

“What this campaign is doing is bringing together millions of people contributing an average of just $27 each to take on a billionaire class which is so used to buying elections,” Sanders said in a statement. “Working people standing together are going to propel this campaign to the Democratic nomination and then the White House.”

Sanders’ grassroots campaign has now received 6.5 million contributions from 2 million donors, his campaign said Friday. By raising $44 million in February, his campaign broke his February record of $43.5 million.

In the first quarter of 2016, the Vermont senator has raised $109 million. According to the campaign, more than 97 percent of the money was raised online.

Sanders is looking to carry on his momentum against Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton, after his sweep of three Western states’ primaries over the weekend, and has won five of the last six contests. Sanders has 1,011 delegates to Clinton’s 1,712.
