Kerry: ‘We’re going to do the right thing by refugees’

Secretary of State John Kerry reiterated his and the administration’s continued policy of accepting Syrian refugees on Wednesday.

“We’re going to visit, and invite visitors,” Kerry said. “We’re going to do the right thing by refugees.”

Kerry’s comment comes as congressional Republicans continue to oppose taking in refugees, and are working to set conditions on how they can be allowed in the country.

It also came on the heels of remarks from President Obama, who chided Republicans for fearing women and child refugees. Kerry kept up that criticism on Wednesday.

“How is it that somebody can suddenly say that a 50-year-old woman with her grandchildren is going to be a threat?” Kerry asked during a speech to the Overseas Security Advisory Council conference. “That we can’t process people adequately to keep faith with our values in this country? We’re going to continue to be proud in this department to represent the United States of America.”
