N.H. Union Leader publisher: Trump a ‘con man’

With the New Hampshire primary just days away, the publisher of the state’s biggest newspaper is again attacking front-running Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

In an editorial published Wednesday night, Joseph McQuaid of the New Hampshire Union Leader called Trump a “con man” and said despite Trump’s image as an outsider, he’s “as slick and oily a pol as any we have seen.”

“He is a schoolyard, rich-kid bully who thinks he can push around networks, newspapers, and opponents while conning voters at the same time,” wrote McQuaid, referring to Trump’s announcement this week that he will not appear at the next GOP debate on Thursday. “We have seen that con before and we don’t think New Hampshire voters are going to fall for it.”

McQuaid and Trump have feuded before. In December, he called Trump “an insult to the intelligence” of GOP voters. Trump hit back by calling McQuaid a “lowlife” who was bitter that Trump would not participate in a previous GOP forum hosted by the Union Leader.

McQuaid’s paper has endorsed Chris Christie for the GOP nomination, though Trump is leading the state by wide margins in every poll.
