Jeb Bush will be the first GOP candidate on Colbert’s ‘Late Show’

Stephen Colbert, the longtime political satirist who is shifting gears to take over CBS’ “Late Show” in September, announced Tuesday that his first Republican presidential candidate guest will be Jeb Bush.

“Jeb Bush will be on ‘Late Show’ Sept. 8!” Colbert wrote on Twitter. “My first GOP candidate! Luckily I do 200 shows a year, so I think I can fit them all.”

The “Late Show” returns with Colbert as the host on Sept. 8. Given Colbert’s iconic role at Comedy Central, a mock political commentator with the same name who poked fun at conservatives, it’s difficult to gauge how Bush’s appearance on the show will go.

In a recent New York Times interview, Colbert indicated that his interviewing style will be less comedic and more general interest.

“One of the reasons why I most wanted to drop the character is that I felt I had done everything I could do with him other than have my honest interest in my guest,” he said. “Which is almost constant. Now I feel actually more freed up. That was in some ways the most energetic, the most exciting part of the show to me and now I don’t have to hold back at all.”
