One U.S. service member was killed Wednesday night when a helicopter conducting training at Camp Lejeune, N.C., made a hard landing, according to a Marine Corps release. Eleven were taken to the hospital.
The crew of the CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter was training when it “experienced a hard landing” around 9 p.m., the release said.
The service member who was killed was transferred via air to Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune and pronounced dead at the hospital, the release said. Seven service members were treated at the hospital, one of whom has been admitted but is in stable condition. One service member was transported to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, N.C. Three service members were transferred to Onslow Memorial Hospital and are in stable condition.
The incident is being investigated. The Marines have not released the identity of the service member who was killed, pending notification of next of kin.
