Report: White House considering GOP governor to replace Scalia

The White House is reportedly vetting Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval, a Republican, for the Supreme Court seat that is now vacant after the death of Justice Antonin Scalia.

Republicans have said they wouldn’t give any nominee from President Obama a hearing or a vote. But according to a Wednesday report from the Washington Post, some key Democrats view Sandoval as the only nominee President Obama could select who would be able to “break a Republican blockage in the Senate.”

Sandoval and Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid met Monday, according to the Post. Sandoval, who served as Nevada’s attorney general and a federal judge prior to being governor, told Reid though he has not made a final decision on whether he would accept a Supreme Court nomination, he would allow the vetting process to go forward.

The White House declined a request for comment, while Sandoval could not immediately be reached for comment.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., on Tuesday pledged “no action” will be made on any nomination to replace the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia before November’s presidential election, and other Republican Senators have said similar sentiments.
