Republican megadonor Sheldon Adelson is set to donate massive sums to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, possibly in excess of $100 million, according to the New York Times.
Adelson’s support will come at the expense of backing for Republican congressional candidates, who will receive far less of the billionaire’s donations this year, according to the Times. Other major GOP donors, wary of Trump, have suggested they may focus their giving on preserving a Republican Congress instead of getting behind Trump.
Adelson, who is a major supporter of Israel, has decided to get completely behind Trump even though the presumptive GOP nominee has indicated he might take a more even-handed approach to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, at least initially, in order to increase chances of a deal. But Adelson was assured by Trump at a meeting last week of the candidate’s support for Israel’s security.
