Fact Check: Is Marlboro Selling Marijuana Cigarettes?

An older online myth resurfaced this week, claiming that Malboro was set to release marijuana cigarettes in four states.

The first thing readers should notice from the article by Urhealthguide (besides the ridiculous name of the publication) is that the release date of the marijuana cigs is set for November 1, 2015, while the article was published today.

After a clinical research trial, the world’s largest cigarette producer, announced today that they will join the recreational marijuana bandwagon and begin the sale of marijuana cigarettes in these 4 U.S. states beginning November 1, 2015. This product is marketed under the brand “Marlboro M” and will be available for sale through marijuana-licensed outlets.

The Marlboro-marijuana myth has existed on sites like DailyBuzz, Now8News, and Abril Uno for quite some time.

But Mary Jane advocates—who are often concerned with the kilos of misinformation surrounding marijuana—have debunked this fake news. Green Rush Daily, Leafly, Herb, and of course Mary Jane’s Diary have been fighting back on this hoax article since its inception (while taking a few hits themselves, surely).

Perhaps Betty Crocker’s delicious THC treats from Betty Crocker will be next on the cannabis con-list.
