In keeping with their “friendly” meeting Sunday, D.C. United and Real Madrid kept it friendly Saturday night. Both teams gathered on the rooftop of the W Hotel to let off some steam before playing in the steam Sunday. “I’d say the players’ wives were probably more interested in photo taking with the Real Madrid players than the DCU players were,” one observer joked.
Also in attendance: Navy Lt. Cmdr. Andy “The Bachelor” Baldwin, White House aide Melody Barnes, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs, Wizards GM Ernie Grunfeld, eventual Legg Mason Classic winner Juan Martin del Potro, “Top Chef” contestant and local chef Spike Mendelsohn, White House deputy chief of staff Mona Sutphen and Katherine Kennedy of “Blonde Charity Mafia.”
Meanwhile, Larry Stefanki, who coaches tennis star Andy Roddick, had a unique D.C. experience earlier this week. As he told ESPN’s Darren Cahill, he went to the National Archives to check out the Declaration of Independence. But just before he arrived, someone pulled this fire alarm and the document sunk into the bowels of the building. Once the all-clear was given, however, the incident shortened his wait time from 40 minutes to about five.
Left: We’re guessing heartthrob Cristiano Ronaldo (pictured at practice Saturday) was the most sought-after photo by the ladies this weekend.
