Dow Jones hits record high following GOP midterm takeover

The Dow Jones Industrial Average index hit a record high Wednesday as markets opened the day after the Republican Party won control of both chambers of Congress in the midterm elections.

Analysts had been watching stock markets for signs of a bounce from the change in power in the Senate.

The Dow index edged up less than a percentage point to 17,481 shortly after opening Wednesday, setting a new record.

The S&P 500 index also ticked up Wednesday morning to near the record high set earlier in the month.
