Ephron’s got something cooking at Smithsonian

There’s an exhibit at the Smithsonian Museum of American History dedicated to the star of her latest film, but don’t presume Nora Ephron knows anything about it.

The writer of “Julie & Julia” was in Washington on Wednesday night to donate props from her latest film, which tells the true stories on legendary cook Julia Child and the woman who started a blog about her adventures in attempting to prepare Child’s recipes. And though Child is in her film’s title, Ephron’s connection to the exhibit only came about when adding pieces from the film.

When Yeas & Nays spoke to Ephron following her remarks about the new objects to be added to the seven-year-old exhibit, we were surprised to find out she had never even seen it before.

“I had no idea that it was happening, I was completely thrilled,” Ephron conceded. “I had never seen Julia Child’s kitchen.”

To cut her some slack, Ephron is referring to the exhibit being closed during the museum’s recent remodeling, so the set designers had to rely on images and floor plans from the museum when making the film to recreate the iconic cuisine.

The items now on display she is familiar with include the film’s script and a blue and white pin-striped dress wore by Meryl Streep’s character in the film.

“This is way better than giving something to the Hard Rock Café,” Ephron joked (but seriously, no?)
