$1,000: Amount one local family shelled out last weekend for their son’s 12th birthday in order to buy Serendipity 3’s Golden Opulence Sundae. This is the first time the Golden Opulence Sundae has been purchased at the eatery’s D.C. location, and the identity of the buyer was not released. The sundae was created back in 2004, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of New York City’s Serendipity. The sundae is served in a Baccarat Harcourt Crystal Goblet (which the buyer, thank goodness, gets to keep) and made with vanilla ice cream that is then covered in edible 23-carat gold leaf. It is than drizzled with the world’s most expensive chocolate, Amedei Porcelana, and covered with Chuao chocolate, which is another of the world’s best. The sundae also is topped with a small bowl of gold-colored caviar. It’s infused with fresh orange, passion fruit and Armagnac, a brandy from the southwest of France. Finally, it is topped with truffles, gold-dipped French dragees almonds and marzipan fruits.
