Mia Farrow gets Congress to starve for Darfur

Everyone knows about the atrocious genocide in Darfur, but did you know this? A group in Congress is working to fix the problem not with legislation or a blue-ribbon commission, but by taking a page from the playbook of actress Mia Farrow.

Yes, Farrow’s fast for Darfur was first picked up by “Rebel Billionaire” Richard Branson last week, and now it’s the Congressional Black Caucus’ turn.

In an announcement Tuesday morning on Capitol Hill, CBC members vowed to stop eating for a day to keep Farrow’s fast going — a fast that a doctor ordered her to cease after 12 days.

Reps. Barbara Lee, D-Calif., Donald Payne, D-N.J., Maxine Waters, D-Calif., and Donna Edwards, D-Md., nodded in agreement as Farrow talked about how the fast came “out of desperation” and not “[knowing] what else to do.”

But one person who may count fasts as his new go-to form of civil disobedience is Rep. John Lewis, D.-Ga.

“I’ve been arrested twice [for this cause]. Thanks to the three-strikes law. I may be going to jail for life if this happens again,” Lewis said, referring to one of his arrests that happened just last month outside the Sudanese embassy.

Good call. Not only do fasts prevent jail time, but swimsuit season is just around the corner.
