The many fans of Rep. Aaron Schock, R-Ill. — and he does have many, whether they be admirers of his ability to get legislation passed or his abs — might be disappointed to learn what the youngest member of Congress does with his weekends: nothing.
“In four years, I’ve never actually spent a weekend in Washington,” Schock told Yeas & Nays at a reception hosted by the Susan G. Komen Young Professionals Tuesday night. “I go home every weekend, or I’m going off to some banquet.”
As for his D.C. weeknights, Schock describes a less-than-sexy line up: “different banquets,” “committee hearings,” “policy stuff,” and “dinners with constituents.”
“I cannot think of a time when I just got to socialize,” he said. “My only free time is really in the morning, when I make time to work out.” (He also takes a moment in the dry sauna to read the paper.)
Schock maintains that he does have friends in Congress, identifying fellow Illinois Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger as one of the “very smart and talented” crop of thirty-something members, but they aren’t exactly hitting the bars together. “Sometimes we’ll be at, it might be the NRCC Annual Dinner,” Schock said. “Or it might be the American Banker Association.” He says he and Kinzinger have “done a few fun things together in Chicago.”
Schock might not have time to socialize, but he was certainly in demand at Tuesday’s event, held at the Foggy Bottom home of Chris Edwards and Albert Fonticiella. Dressed in a blue suit and pink paisley tie, he drew the eye of most of the guests, male and female.
