Donald Trump disseminated a campaign ad via Instagram on Monday that attacks former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush as “confused” on major issues, implying that perhaps he has smoked marijuana more recently than 40 years ago.
The ad features clips of Bush answering questions, including about the Iraq War and immigration, before highlighting his comment during the September GOP presidential debate that, “Forty years ago I smoked marijuana.”
The short ad closes with text asking, “Are we sure it was only forty years ago?” before the Trump campaign slogan appears. Trump, who remains number one in the Washington Examiner‘s power rankings, posted the attack ad with the message, “Jeb has been confused for forty years …”
“This coming from the candidate who can’t remember the names of our biggest enemies around the world. Seems these attacks are running out of steam,” replied Allie Brandenburger, Bush campaign spokeswoman, in a statement.
While Trump has focused his attention on Bush, Trump’s poll numbers appear to have dipped slightly since the second GOP presidential debate. A CNN/ORC poll released on Sunday showed he dropped 8 percentage points from its previous poll conducted before the debate. The same poll showed Carly Fiorina gaining 12 percentage points, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio jumping 8 percentage points, and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker falling below 1 percent of the vote.
