Cruz victor in Values Voter straw poll

The 2015 Values Voter Summit held in Washington, D.C., announced the results of its presidential straw poll Saturday, and Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, dominated with 35 percent of the votes cast.

Cruz finished first with 35 percent of the total and 408 votes, double that of his closest competitor former neurosurgeon Ben Carson, who won 18 percent of the vote.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee finished third with 14 percent, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., won 13 percent, and Donald Trump came in fifth with 5 percent.

First runner-up Carson won the vice presidential straw poll.

The conservative event was highlighted by appearances from all five of the top-five placing candidates. High-polling candidates like former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Carly Florina did not appear at the event, and neither did social conservative favorites like Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal or former Sen. Rick Santorum.
