Tip causes Vienna police to step up security

Police in Vienna, Austria say they have stepped up security after several European capitals were warned of a possible attack involving explosives or firearms between Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Police spokesman Christoph Poelzl told the Austria Press Agency there was no concrete threat to a specific place at a particular time, and thus there is no need to call off any events.

According to Vienna police Saturday, the tip came from an unidentified “friendly” intelligence service a few days before Christmas.

Police said they will step up surveillance of public places where large crowds are expected, including transportation spots, the Associated Press reported.

Security has been in Europe high following the Nov. 13 deadly terror attacks in Paris.
