Donald Trump on Monday escalating his attacks on Jeb Bush for deploying George W. Bush and Barbara Bush as campaign surrogates in South Carolina.
Trump tweeted, “Funny that Jeb(!) didn’t want help from his family in his failed campaign and didn’t even want to use his last name. Then mommy, now brother!”
He also added, Now that George Bush is campaigning for Jeb(!), is he fair game for questions about World Trade Center, Iraq War and eco collapse? Careful!”
Trump is alluding to the struggle candidate Jeb Bush has had with balancing the advantages his last name brings with the drawbacks created by people’s uneasiness with electing a third president from the same family. Also, President Bush’s legacy is associated with the unpopular Iraq War and financial crisis with the general public and with expanding government among many conservatives.
Bush began the campaign by declaring, “I’m my own man,” trying to distance himself from his last name, but has more recently embraced his family legacy, culminating with former President Bush’s first scheduled public campaign appearances this week.
Trump also assailed the Saturday debate audience, saying they were too friendly to Jeb Bush.
Trump tweeted Sunday, “Loved the debate last night, and almost everyone said I won, but the RNC did a terrible job of ticket distrbution. All donors & special ints.”
He also tweeted, “Tickets for future debates should be put out to the general public instead of being given to the lobbyists & special interests – the bosses!”
Despite an apparent sevenfold lead for Trump in South Carolina before the debate, the debate audience frequently loudly cheered Bush, as well as Marco Rubio, and booed Trump.
Trump made the point that in his opinion that the audience was full of “special interests” throughout the debate as well.
Now that George Bush is campaigning for Jeb(!), is he fair game for questions about World Trade Center, Iraq War and eco collapse? Careful!
