Speakeasy: FLOTUS on approval ratings, pot-smoking and “uncle” Joe

“I don’t wield it over him … I’ve seen what it takes to be president — I kind of watch this thing pretty closely – and the president is getting all the hard decisions where there’s no easy answer. That’s the kind of stuff that comes across his desk, and when it comes down to it — when you’re making those judgment calls — all you have is your character, your values and your vision for this country. And I see him being so consistent in disregarding the chatter and the noise, and really moving forward towards a country where there’s more equity, more fairness, where our kids will grow up in schools that will educate them — where they’ll have opportunities.”

— First lady Michelle Obama, explaining to “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart Tuesday night why she doesn’t lord her high approval ratings over President Obama during marital disputes. During the interview, she talked about her new book, “American Grown,” and raising her kids around “uncle” Joe Biden. When asked indirectly about the president’s wily pot-smoking days in Hawaii, the first lady said “He was like many young people,” but “he realized he could with do more with his life.” She added that “When he lost his father that was one of those click-in moments … And he really buckled down, he transferred schools, went to Columbia and thought about how to use his life to the fullest.”
