The Australian government confirmed Thursday that debris recovered by a south African country was “highly likely” to have come from the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.
“The analysis has concluded the debris is almost certainly from MH370,” Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said in a statement. “That such debris has been found on the east coast of Africa is consistent with drift modelling performed by CSIRO and further affirms our search efforts in the southern Indian Ocean.”
Looking over two pieces of debris found on a Mozambique beach, investigators said the items were consistent with materials from a Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 aircraft.
The plane went missing two years ago this month during a flight from Malaysia to Beijing.
“The search for MH370 continues,” Chester added. “There are 25,000 square kilometres of the underwater search area still to be searched. We are focused on completing this task and remain hopeful the aircraft will be found.”
