Lawmaker: Make federal officials use Uber

Rep. David Schweikert, R-Ariz., has introduced a new bill that would require some federal agencies to sell some of the cars they own, and force federal workers to rely on rideshare companies like Uber and Lyft when they need to get somewhere.

Schweikert’s bill would apply to the Departments of Agriculture, Interior and Energy. Under his plan, those departments would have to reduce the size of their light vehicle fleets by 10 percent, and it encourages workers to rely on commercial companies to get from point A to point B.

Specifically, it says the secretaries of those departments would also have to try to “increase the use by the department of commercial ride-sharing companies.”

Schweikert was first elected to Congress in 2010, coming in the Tea Party wave of that year, which saw several members win office on a platform of eliminating waste and cutting down the size of government.

Schweikert and others in that class have made names for themselves by keeping pressure on leaders to target what some see as the often duplicative and inefficient sections of the federal workforce.
