Rubio says he wouldn’t support cap-and-trade

GOP presidential candidate Sen. Marco Rubio rejected assertions that he supports a cap-and-trade program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change.

“When I am president there will never be a cap-and-trade,” Rubio said Thursday night at the Fox News GOP debate in Des Moines.

“I have never supported cap and trade. And I never said it was a good idea,” the senator from Florida said. He also said President Obama’s programs to address climate change, which encourage cap-and-trade porgrams, sacrifice the economy for the environment.

“I do not believe we need to destroy our economy in order to protect our environment,” he said. “And especially with these programs they are asking us to pass that will do nothing to protect the environment but will be devasting to the economy.”

Republicans and critics of Obama’s climate plan say it will drive up energy costs and increase the potential for power outages.
