Tenn. governor vetoes bill making Bible official state book

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam on Thursday vetoed a bill making the Bible the official state book.

The attorney general for the Volunteer State, Herbert Slatery III, was concerned the bill, if enacted, would violate both the Tennessee Constitution and the First Amendment.

The state’s legislature is still in session, however, and could attempt to override Haslam’s veto.

Tennessee’s legislature is dominated by Republicans, and both Haslam and Slatery are Republicans.
