Clinton supporter invoked internment when opposing Syrian refugees

The Virginia mayor who invoked the U.S. internment of Japansese Americans during World War II in a letter explaining his opposition to resettling Syrian refugees endorsed Hillary Clinton for president.

Roanoke Mayor David Bowers, a Democrat, issued a statement opposing the relocation of Syrian refugees to “our part of Virginia.”

“I’m reminded that President Franklin D. Roosevelt felt compelled to sequester Japanese foreign nationals after the bombing of Pearl Harbor,” Bowers wrote, “and it appears the threat of harm to America from ISIS now is just as real and serious as that from our enemies then.”

Bowers was one of 137 mayors who had endorsed Clinton for president by the end of last month, according to a statement from the campaign.
