On Sunday, Donald Trump doubled down on comments he made this weekend about seeing thousands of people cheering the day the World Trade Center came down on Sept. 11, 2001, when terrorists hijacked two planes and slammed them into the two towers.
“This Week” host George Stephanopoulos showed a clip of Trump at a campaign event Saturday telling the audience at that he was in Jersey City, N.J., when the attack happened and that he saw “thousands and thousands of people cheering.”
Stephanopoulos said the police claim it never happened and rumors about it have been circulating on the Internet for some time.
“Did you misspeak yesterday?” he asked Trump.
“It did happen. I saw it,” said Trump, adding he saw it on television.
“Police say it didn’t happen,” Stephanopoulos said again.
Trump did not budge on his story, saying he saw people on the other side of New Jersey “where you have large Arab populations” cheering as the World Trade Center came down.
“I know it might be not politically correct for you to talk about it,” Trump added, “but there were people cheering as that building came down — as those buildings came down. And that tells you something. It was well covered at the time, George.”
