Because politics touches everything in Washington, including our plates, we at Yeas & Nays have compiled a list of some of the area eateries that are trying to make this presidential election cycle tastier
» Mexican fare — On Monday, the Rockville-based Mexican chain California Tortilla is debuting its election-themed burrito bowls. For $7.29, customers can purchase Obama’s Chicken Teriyaki Luau Bowl, which includes rice, grilled chicken, teriyaki sauce, stir-fried veggies and grilled pineapple spears, or Romney’s Mexican Mitt-Loaf Bowl, made up of grilled Mexican meatloaf, fresh mashed potatoes, sauteed veggies, corn and salsa with a sweet and savory sauce.
» Burgers — BLT Steak’s political burger board has been around for a while, but these days, it also includes a Romney burger. For $22, you can bite into an 8-ounce CAB burger with a Utah-style pastrami stack, melted cheese and some “fry” sauce. Good Stuff Eatery, which once upon a time had a McCain Burger on its menu, won’t be giving Romney the same honor, but we hear an election promotion is in the works.
» Cupcakes — Keeping the cupcake trend on trend, Sprinkles Cupcakes has created special election boxes that spell out the names of the candidates and more bipartisan phrases such as “Vote 2012.” The box of Romney cupcakes includes six red velvets and six dark chocolates. The boxes can be ordered from any Sprinkles location, including the one in Georgetown.
» Macarons — Moving on to more dessert, the Sweet Lobby has produced Obama and Romney macarons. “Unlike the candidates, the flavors are the same: politically neutral vanilla, vanilla, vanilla,” owner Winnette McIntosh Ambrose told Yeas & Nays. She recommends preordering the sweets from the Eastern Market bakery, though some will be sold at the store as well.
» Cocktails — Later this month, the 1331 Bar & Lounge located in the JW Marriott will be debuting two cocktail creations based on the candidates. On Aug. 27, just in time for the Republican National Convention, the bar will start serving the Mint Romney, made with Chambord, Frangelico, cream and fresh mint. And the Democratic response? That would be the Barockin’ Mai Tai, below, a concoction of orange rum, fresh pineapple and lemon juice, lime soda and blue curacao.
