Let Tuesday serve as an example of how the debt ceiling debate stole playtime.
Sens. Al Franken, D-Minn., and Patty Murray, D-Wash., along with White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley, were slated to attend this summer’s last Let’s Read! Let’s Move! reading and exercise event at the Department of Education, but all three had to cancel last minute. Instead, Education Secretary Arne Duncan and his senior adviser for early learning Jacqueline Jones stepped in and read the book “Don’t let the Pigeon Drive the Bus” by Mo Willems to kids from a number of area institutions. The day wasn’t a complete loss for the kiddies who also got to work out with Dora the Explorer.
“Let’s Read! Let’s Move” has gone on for three summers strong without the kind of cancellations that occurred Tuesday. Some of the readers that have stopped by include former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, former White House adviser David Axelrod, Attorney General Eric Holder and first granny Marian Robinson.
