Liberal New York Times columnist Gail Collins is echoing what many in the media have been saying for the last several months.
It’s time for Bill Clinton to leave his wife.
In her column Thursday, Collins offered Clinton some advice on how to make her campaign more than just an alternative choice to “the businessman with a terrible business record” Donald Trump.
“Send Bill home. This is an easy call,” Collins said. “At best, he’s a reminder that she didn’t get where she’s at entirely on her own. At worst — well, plane. Attorney general.”
Bill Clinton has been the source of several controversies throughout the campaign, most recently for having met with Attorney General Loretta Lynch just days before the FBI was set to recommend to her whether charges should be brought against his wife for mishandling government information.
In early April, while campaigning in Philadelphia, he clashed with a Black Lives Matter protester and defended a crime bill his administration passed in the 1990s that critics say unfairly targeted black communities.
“You are defending the people who killed the lives you say matter,” Clinton said to the protester. He subsequently apologized for his comment.
That incident came just a few days after Clinton knocked “the awful legacy of the last eight years,” a comment that many thought was directed at President Obama’s two terms. An aide to Clinton later said the former president was referring to “obstruction” from Republicans that Obama has encountered.
