House Watch: Florida GOP District Flips

Another Republican-held House district has flipped, this time in the swing state of Florida. Democrat Donna Shalala, a former Cabinet secretary and university president, has defeated Republican Maria Salazar, according to NBC News.

The Health and Human Services secretary under President Bill Clinton, Shalala will take over the South Florida district long held by moderate Republican Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who is retiring from the House. Shalala had been the president of the University of Miami and the president of the Clinton Foundation.

Shalala is the second Democrat Tuesday to flip a Republican district after Jennifer Wexton, who defeated incumbent Republican Barbara Comstock in Virginia. Both districts voted for Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump in 2016.

Update: A second GOP-held seat in South Florida has gone to the Democrats. Carlos Curbelo, the incumbent Republican, has conceded his race to his Democratic challenger Debbie Mucarsel-Powell.
